There are not many opportunities to build standard raingardens within the City of Melbourne. We took the opportunity to include one in this dead-end street where the local green space was being renewed .

One of the ongoing issues with raingardens in general is the accumulation of organic and non-organic matter on the surface of the filter media (sand). This accumulation causes clogging of the filter media, bypassing and potential flooding if it is not removed regularly. But scooping off the material from between plants is difficult and time consuming, therefore it is often not done effectively. We resolve this problem by trialing a grill across the entry. As the photo’s show, it’s effective but requires regular cleaning. With a smooth concrete base in front of the grill it’s a simple task to shovel out the accumulated debris.
